You don't have to be a great singer to perform on stage, but you do you need to have a certain presence which will help you to bond with the audience!

For stage singing, it's important to pick songs that suit you best and that you really like. You should understand the songs perfectly, not in a literary way, but in the simplest form. The lyrics should be about something you can identify with personally. Before a performance on stage, you should do a number of rehearsals and know the lyrics by heart as well as the order of the songs to be performed. It's best to rehearse a lot before a performance but don't over do it - make sure you don't damage your voice before singing on stage.
You should be well prepared before leaving home. Don't arrive at your venue only to find you've forgotten your microphone or other equipment that you'll need. Arrive with extra equipment, even if the venue has promised everything you'll need for stage singing, bring your own as well. Arrive well ahead of time, check out the scene, make sure you have plenty of time for sound checks, get to know the people and get settled in comfortably. This way, you'll have enough time before the actual performance to make sure everything is perfect, to do vocal warm-ups, have a drink and relax.
When it comes down to stage singing, you'll need to perform rehearsals and vocal warm-ups. For long rehearsals you should make sure you have enough to drink and make sure your throat doesn't feel dry. Know how to draw out your voice: from the diaphragm and not from the throat. In general, it's best to take voice lessons in order to learn how to reach your best singing standard on stage and how to keep your voice at its best. For the vocal technicians among you, you can take courses that will teach you techniques for stage singing.
Your stage performance is important: This is what your audience came for. Stand and move on stage with self confidence. Stand with both legs firmly on the ground don't lean on one leg or the other. Take advantage of the space. Many singers close their eyes when singing on stage, try to remember, the audience has trouble connecting with you if there is no eye contact. Keep closed eyes to a minimum, or better yet, keep your eyes open all the time. Furthermore, don't keep gazing at the floor. In a smaller area, you can look straight at the audience or a bit above, in order to avoid embarrassment.
According to the type of songs, you'll know whether to concentrate on producing a perfect pitch or to let yourself get a bit wild, even if that means producing somewhat lesser quality stage singing. Remember that most people in the audience aren't professional musicians and they won't really know if you've wavered somewhere along the line of the performance if you've got them involved and excited, that's what really counts.
