Video Clips
The real turning point for video clips was in 1981 when MTV made its debut. This channel became incredibly popular and gave birth to other similar channels over the years.

Since then video clips have become an integral part of the distribution of songs, records and the artists themselves. It is a known fact that if you're not on TV you don't exist. In the beginning, clips included simple shoots of the singer and the band, on a blue screen that had few 80's looking effects. But with time, the demand for high quality clips changed the rules of the game. In today's world, video clips are often very expensive and the record companies invest deeply in producing them.

Tips for producing video clips
If you're a really good, successful singer, record companies will produce clips for you at their expense, so disregard the following tips.

For the rest of you, video clips are your most important calling card. Music editors, reviewers and the audience will judge you and your music based on your clips.

The Internet is another track for viewing clips. One of the main advantages of the Internet sites is that they allow low-budget clips to be seen by a vast audience. True enough, lots of videos that appear on the Internet is done by amateurs, but still, the Internet is a wonderful venue for professional musicians who don't have the money and financial backing that the big production companies have. Through the Internet the audience can become loyal fans. The video clips can be added to the artist's official website as well as their music and short movies.

Another way of exposing clips is through local TV stations that give local musicians a stage and show MTV clips as well as local music features. In addition you can add the clips to your demo disc.

When you produce clips, it's important to know that the production needs to be professional. If you thought about filming it with your mobile phone, or even with a home video camera using your mates, don't! Be professional. When you choose the song for your clip, make sure it's the best song you have.

Don't settle for amateurism at this stage and don't rely on the director or photographer that you got through a forum. It may be cheaper, but the chances that your career will benefit are close to nil. Get professionals or hire a professional studio and watch as many of their clips as you can before deciding - not just the demo that they show. Remember every detail of this production is important. It's the making of a movie in every sense and only professionals: photographers, lighting crew, makeup artists and everyone else involved needs to be top-notch. The equipment also needs to be high quality.

The video clip's script writer, whoever that may be, needs to be a pro. The music ideas need to be interesting. When writing the script, try to be creative and original, from all aspects of the clip.

Producing low budget clips
If you want to save money, you can contact film students to produce your clip. If you do, make sure to find out if they know what they're doing: a last year student is ideal and not one that's just beginning his studies. Get someone who's already done some real work in the field.
