Music and Media Print

In order to succeed in the music industry, it's not enough just to have a good voice or to be creative and original. None of the above counts unless you are famous and for that, you need the media.

Music and Media

Posted by Katriona on 01-11-2011

To make it in the world of music it's important to go through all the channels at the same time: Make appearances, make sure your music is heard on the radio, make sure that people are hearing about you, be original and creative, make sure that the local and national media are invited to watch your shows, and advertise on the Internet, in the different social webs, on the download sites and in forums.

Every music career needs the media's "help"
The media is hard to approach. Newspapers, radio, Internet and TV are hard to get to penetrate. You need to be thick-skinned because media coverage is what you need to reach your potential audience. You need to make yourself known to the public through the media. Also, press clippings will form part of your portfolio or publicity kit.

It happens only if the media covers it
After the stress of your first performance is over, that's the time to get down to organising your contact with the media in a serious way. If you're interested in releasing a radio single, you should wait until you have a really polished performance and a loyal audience and then make sure the press has a good reason to write only good things about you.

Another option for new singers and bands, is to ignore the media completely in the beginning and concentrate on advertising your appearances (posters, newsletters, word of mouth... ). If you're successful in creating a buzz, someone from the media will be sure to follow.

You should know who's going to write about you with relation to genre and level of advertisement. At the beginning it's mostly in local papers and local and college radio stations. Also, papers and Internet sites that focus on music, will pick up on you. At the music shops, you'll be able to find local music papers or 'fanzines'. Send your material straight to the columnist or broadcaster. If someone shows interest, keep them updated in your latest developments.

Tips for upcoming media interviews
Every musician says things in first interviews that he's not proud of in coming years. It's all right and that's the way to learn and practise PR (Public Relations: handling your affairs in the media department). But try to be more in control in the future over what comes out of your mouth. Try to prepare a few important things that you want to release to your audience through the media. Also, be ready with your personal story and maybe to give something a little 'spicy', something perhaps a bit off the record that you're willing to share, maybe a little behind the scenes argument or a love story. It's the personal stories that make people want to read on and so that's what the media wants to expose.
