If a singer wants to make it in the music industry he needs an album. Since producing an album is an expensive and complicated process, recording a demo disk is the easiest solution for beginners.

Demo Disc

Up until a few years ago, a would-be singer had to invest a small fortune in order to produce an album and then beg recording companies for a contract. Nowadays, though, through technology, singers are able to produce quality albums at a reasonable rate and there's no need to waste valuable time until they know it's a sure investment.

Why do a demo?
The aim is to convince recording companies or private investors to understand that you are the next great star, and that it will be worth their while to invest in your future. Also, the demo is used to send to performing venues. The demo, in short, is your calling card as a fresh, new and upcoming singer. You should leave such a demo disc with any potential contact you come across, or anyone who can possibly help your singing career progress. Not every singer has the funds necessary to produce a professional album, that requires hours in a recording studio, musicians, producer, cover designs, public relations people, videos, etc.

What is a demo?
A demo is simply an inexpensive, non-professional, recording of songs that enable the listener to rate the talent of the singer. Usually a demo contains three songs and it's recommended to include a simple clip so that stage performance talent can also be seen. In a way, you could say that the demo is your 'presentation'.

Producing a Demo
There are professional and semi-professional recording studios that will produce your demo disc at a reasonable cost. There are recording studios that will supply you with basic mixing services and others that will provide you with a musical producer, playback and composition. They will even design and market your disc. If you have the know-how and the talent, you can produce your demo disc in a home recording studio; just don't forget to invest in professional graphic design for the cover of the disc.

Frequent Mistakes
The better your presentation, the more effective your marketing efforts. In spite of the relative simplicity of producing a demo, it is very easy to botch the presentation and in many cases it is this very demo disc that ruins any chances for a singer to get a foot in the door.

Sometimes, the would-be singer invests a lot into a demo that just doesn't do him justice - for instance, a singer that invests in professional musicians and many recording studio hours, but doesn't sing very much. Or a singer that invests in expensive mix services that are inappropriate. Remember that the demo is supposed to show off YOUR talents and it doesn't have to be radio phonic quality.

Radio Broadcast
Although the end target of the demo isn't necessarily radio broadcasting, there are radio programmes that specialise in presenting new singers. Stations that are based in colleges are especially willing to broadcast good quality demos (demos that are recorded at higher quality than those intended for marketing to different performing venues).
