Every professional singer at the beginning of his singing career goes to the recording studio to record a demo or a single. We've gathered a list of tips that can help you out in the recording studio.

Make sure to approach a recording studio only when you're absolutely sure that you're ready, in terms of your singing and voice strength. If you're not absolutely sure that you can do your optimal work in the studio, it will be worth your while to take some voice instruction in preparation.

What goes on in the recording studio?
Now that you've decided that you're ready and you've found the perfect recording studio, this is the drill: When you arrive at the recording studio, relax. The first thing you'll need to do is to sing into a microphone so that the technician can perform balance. Then you'll sing a few songs as warm-up exercises. Only after a few rehearsals will the technician start to record. You'll do a few takes until you're happy with the results. Then you'll do a few "do-overs', "punches", to fix up any flaws on specific parts of the song. The average time it takes to record one song is about three hours, so don't even think about recording an entire album in two hours, even if each song is only a few minutes long.

Choosing a song for recording
If you wish to buy the rights to a song written and arranged by someone else, take into consideration that this will be quite costly if you are a beginner, because the creator will not expect to be earning any royalties.

If you choose to sing a well-known song, make sure that you have a brand-new arrangement. The listener will automatically make a comparison between you and the original performer of the song if it is presented in its original format. The original will always be better and this is a sure-fire way to lose all interest from the listener.
Be original and surprising.

How to prepare for studio recording?
Take your time, before entering the recording studio, sit and think about the song, what it says to you, how you interpret it and how you identify with the words.
Have a good night's sleep the night before recording. In general, it's better to record later on in the day - at least two hours after you've totally woken up. On the other hand, don't head towards the recording studio after spending a day yelling and straining your voice. Leave plenty of time to arrive at the recording studio on time (or earlier). Don't eat a large meal beforehand, and don't eat when you're in the recording studio.

Recording Studio - Technical Advice
If you have previous stage experience, remember that the microphone in the recording studio (condenser) is quite different from microphones on the stage (dynamic microphones). Because the condenser is so sensitive, sudden high notes may cause distortions in the recording. You need to learn how to raise volume in the condenser without really raising your own vocal volume too much.
So, take your time, prepare yourself in advance, work with professionals and your production will be a success!
