Record Companies
Record companies receive hundreds of new albums daily and the majority of them are never even heard. If, by chance, your demo manages to find its way to the headphones of some junior employee in a record company, it's possible that they will listen to it for a few seconds before he decides your fate. Even if, by chance, they love it, the road is tough and long. By now you've understood that the road to recording is long, complicated and full of obstacles. So, to get the ball rolling, you must make sure that someone in the industry knows about you.

You have to spend time seriously learning about the industry and about the record companies. You need to know about all the opportunities that key industry people from record companies are planning. For example, there may be an event that you need to push your way into. If there isn't, send out your press kit to their office. Make sure to add any recommendations from anyone you know in the music business. Make contacts with anyone well-known in the business, including: Managers, owners of clubs, the press and use these contacts whenever possible.

Some music companies and managers offer the less attractive jobs to new performers as well as offering them professional advice and tips. Some of these people charge a huge amount and some offer their services for a relatively low sum. You should check your contract out before signing the contract and before spending money on it.

Some record companies offer new performers the chance to appear in a 'collection' album together with other new artists. Those are sent to radio stations or for distribution in record shops. Check out all the details before committing to this type of venture. Some of them are serious and honest; others are just waiting to take advantage of you.

If you get the chance, join a professional union or group of musicians in your area. Unions are supposed to provide legal assistance and promotion when the need arises. In the UK, the Musicians' Unionis legally responsible for bands and performers and can assist in guarding your rights in relation to record companies.

Someone is interested: What now?
If you've succeeded in obtaining someone's interest; you may be invited to a meeting/intervew. Be prepared to hear harsh criticism about your work. The record company's goal is, first and foremost, financial. The remarks will be focused with that in mind. Be prepared to 'accept' all the criticism and to make changes. The record company will now make you an offer for producing an additional demo or, if they're really impressed by you, they may offer to release a single to promote you on the air waves.

If the glorious moment arrives and you're offered a music contract with a well-known record company - that's the moment to get busy! Make sure that other record companies hear about the offer, in hope for stirring up some competition over you as this will be highly beneficial.
