Acting Auditions
When auditioning for the theatre, television and cinema: an actor must be suitable for a certain part. This is called type-casting. Usually the test is done according to a part in a written text, which the actor should learn by heart.

The different arts have different kinds of auditions. Musicians usually need to know a piece of music that they wish to perform by heart and dancers need to know the same with some choreography.

Some auditions are held where the actors are chosen very carefully, and some just invite a whole array of actors who may be suitable as far as age or style goes. One person, or several people, will judge, according to the production. In a very large production there may be a casting room, where one person may manage the entire audition and choose the actors for specific roles. The director may be there and maybe some of the producers, a representative of the broadcasting company and all sorts of other interested observers. Other auditions, for advertising for instance, may be very small affairs.

Auditions for recorded productions are studied by the production team to choose the preferred actors. Auditions for the stage will usually take place on the stage in front of the director who will judge the actor's presence. Auditions for the stage and for acting schools will include a monologue or poetry of the actor's choice. Make sure to prepare well.

For auditions for TV series or dramas, or for movies, you'll be sent a copy of the part of the script that you're expecting to perform. It's important to learn the part by heart and even to read the entire script beforehand if possible. An audition for an advert may also be precluded by giving a copy of the text just before the audition. You should know it by heart anyway. Sometimes you may be asked to sing or dance, or to do some warm ups beforehand.

Always be on time, don't be late, no matter what. Come with self-confidence and enjoy yourself. It's easy to tell if your not. You'll usually receive a part of the text that is not too full of emotion, but do your monologue extremely well. Sometimes when the casting crew isn't quite sure about whether an actor is suitable or not, they will ask the actor to perform a part that they know well enough.

If you're accepted, you'll be contacted. If you're not accepted, you probably won't be contacted. That doesn't mean that you weren't good. It may simply mean that you're not suitable for the typecast. Don't let not getting a part get you down. Every actor does many auditions that they don't get accepted for. Each audition is a step forward and good training for the next one.
