In order to make us believe that acting on stage or acting on-camera is effortless, actors require a lot of techniques and preparations.

Acting School

Posted by Katriona on 01-11-2011

Even actors that are endowed with natural talent and ooze charisma usually have a background that includes some kind of acting school in their resume. The more reputable an actor, chances are the more formal training he or she has had.

How to choose the right acting school?
There are so many choices including acting schools, acting workshops and acting courses available. Here's a short list of tips that can help you decide

Ask yourself those questions:
Are you sure that your future is in acting? If you're not convinced you should find a short course to help you make up your mind.
Do you have the time and resources to invest?
Who are the acting teachers at a particular school?
Is the acting school of your choice reputable?
Does the acting school of your choice help by guiding the alumni into the acting industry?
Does the acting school stage productions in which students participate in?
Does the school act as a facilitator between students and people in the professional acting world and does the school provide information and / or leg up in auditions?

Ask yourself what you wish to garner from this profession: to become rich and famous? To become a television star? A theatre performer? To combine between an acting career and one of a singer/dancer? Do you wish to write and direct?
Or perhaps you'd rather have an academic background. If the latter is the case, you should consider studying theory at an academic institute.
For people lacking acting experience, it is highly suggested to attend acting lessons for beginners. There is no reason to attend acting lessons in a group where you feel that you know less than the other participants.

Acting school will provide you with the tools you need when approaching an audition. They will also guide you in presenting yourself to a director and in to the publicity. In addition, you'll have the chance to practise playing different parts, both on the stage and on camera. The acting lessons will include analysing texts, building characters, acting naturally in scenes and using real-life situations as part of the process in building a character. At the same time, most acting schools also offer a variety of courses: history of the theatre, voice coaching, speech, movement and dance, acting on and off-camera, and even fencing. If you're studying acting at a university or college, there are, of course, the academic requirements to be met. Be aware that each school will accent a certain type of acting - from dramatic stage presentations to Broadway musicals, body and movement theatre, or television and cinematography.

Acting schools - Teachers staff
You should find out which teachers teach at each acting school, including credentials and experience. Find out where the teachers studied and whether or not they are well-known. First of all, this information will give you an idea of what kind of acting teachers they will be and perhaps, more importantly, how much they can help you with future contact in the real world of acting.

Acting school: Additional acting lessons: courses and Master classes
If you have already attended acting lessons, but there is a particular area you wish to polish up, there are lessons for specific areas: on-camera acting lessons, preparation for auditions, or any other area that may improve your performance quality.
Master classes are the perfect solution for those of you who want to improve and for people who aren't quite sure about a certain area they chose to specialise in.

How to pass the acting school's examination committee?
The best acting schools hold auditions for registrants and accept only a few of them. In order to receive exact details about the acceptance requirements, contact the acting school directly. Usually the entrance exam includes a monologue or two (dramatic and comical), a song or two (slow and upbeat). It is worth your while to arrive at an audition after having received some kind of training - basic acting lessons or basic voice coaching at the very least. You will also need a matriculation certificate as well as a psychometric score. Some acting schools only accept students who have quite a bit of experience; other schools prefer to accept students who have absolutely no past record.

Most importantly - don't be embarrassed to make an appointment with the school's student counsellor. Every acting school should have one, so if the acting school of your choice doesn't have one, you should rethink your choice. The counsellor will present you with a program that matches your talents and desires.
